When new tires are put on the wheels, before they are shrunk on are the roughly machined and then once they are shrunk on the wheel hubs are they then machined the rest of they way?
This to me makes sence as this way you can have the the tread be true with the center of the axle and any warpage from the heating could be machined. This is what my dad and I do on our 1.5" steam engines.
Perhaps someone who works on NPR 765 could answer this as the tires have been replace.
Thanks.
Jeff

From Norwegian practice I have seen they dont touch the outside of the new tires because of the methode of machining the inside to shrink fit. So like your theory: after the shrinking of both tires and mounting of the security string they take the complete wheelset for machinig to presise flange profile and running diameters like the rest of the coupled wheels.

We have a diesel that has been equipped with "tires" to take the former AEREA interurban wheel tread to AAR wheel tread. These are designed to be reprofiled just like a regular wheel without removing the tires.

The tires come in all machined and ready to go from the supplier with proper outside diameter and profile. If put on properly, and assuming the hubs are decent, no further machine work is required.

If there is significant wear over the years, the profile can be recut without removing the tire from the hub.
