Back around 1992, NS acquired a head-end-power generator car for the steam train set, when the train was upgraded and repainted. This same car was used on the N J Transit 614 program in the late 90's. What became of that car ? Does NS still own it? If so, do they use it ? |

A camp car train (all green N&W cars) arrived in Albany, GA last week to begin track work in the NS yard. There is a power car painted tuscan and lettered Norfolk & Western, number 404, I believe. Could this be the car you are looking for? I will be taking photos of the train this week after the weather improves. Although I am not sure about the current status of the car (although I still believe it is on the NS roster), the car in question is NS 39, a former Santa Fe baggage car. In 1991-1992, David Goode authorized the steam excursion equipment to be upgraded to head end power in order to eliminate problems that frequently plagued the equipment. A few of NS's excursion cars were rebuilt by the fall of 1992 and from about August until the end of the steam season that year NS leased a Dark Green power car from Conrail. NS had planned on using former Wabash baggage car 408 that had been used as a tool car behind 1218 and 611 along with N&W baggage 1407 now owned by the Roanoke Chapter NRHS and CN Baggage 9647, now at the VMT, however it was discovered that the car was too far gone and NS purchased a former ATSF baggage car, the car emerged from the shops as NS HEP car NS 39 and debuted on the May 1-2 weekend trips behind SR 4501 out of Kingsport, TN sponsored by the Watauga Valley Chapter NRHS. THe car was used in the NS steam program until the end in 1994 and as some have mentioned was used on trips behind C&0 614 in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Although I'm not sure of the current status of the car, I am sure that it has never been lettered or numbered N&W 404. Steven Ashley ashleys2@winthrop.edu |

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe that the car you are looking for is owned by the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad. It was traded with Iron Horse Enterprises for some work done on the 614 back in the 90s. Jeff smith@drexel.edu |

I just confirmed the number of the power car currently in Albany, GA. It is 404, and the lettering is "NORFOLK AND WESTERN". It is a 40-ft riveted-side boxcar modified as necessary for the generator. Sure looks fancy in the tuscan paint! > Back around 1992, NS acquired a > head-end-power generator car for the steam > train set, when the train was upgraded and > repainted. > This same car was used on the N J Transit > 614 program in the late 90's. > What became of that car ? > Does NS still own it?
