Restoring National Historic sites

When restoring a site on the registry. What is involved in picking a contractor. Do jobs have to be bid on?

It depends upon the situation. Being on the list does not mean that the item can't be owned by a private person or business. In that case you can do anything you wish. Sadly, even if you want to tear down or scrap the item.

If it is owned the public then you must meet certain standards to use government funds.

Your state historical society (if it exists) is probably the best point to get the info you are looking for. The key is usually whether you want to receive tax credits if it is a commercial project. If so, there are guidelines for some of the work. If you are looking for or have already received government funds for the project, the project officer that supplied the funds will probably have guidelines on bidding procedures. If its your own property, you decide what way to go with the restoration as far as contractors.

Other possible sources of infomration can be a State Office of Historic Preservation or State Architects Office.

The problem we are having is the owner of the property we are tring to buy wants to be named the general contractor in the purchase aggrement.

Unless you have government funding that requires competitive bidding, it's your choice who you use for a contractor. If the seller is able to do what you want and you're happy with the cost, there shouldn't be a problem from "historical"status. Herb
