Post subject:  Last Train to Lookout

To all-

A contributor to Trainorders reported that the last McCloud Railway train to Lookout ran today. Lookout is on the ex-Great Northern "Inside Gateway" between Klamath Falls, OR and Nubieber, CA; it is located a few miles north of Nubieber and has been the interchange point between the McCloud River Railroad/McCloud Railway and the GN/BN/BNSF since 1929. The line has seen less than 6 cars a week over the course of the past 5 years, and a haulage agreement has been struck that will see Union Pacific handle the traffic that formerly went via this route between the McCloud at Mt. Shasta City and BNSF at Klamath Falls, OR.

This line was built by the McCloud River Lumber Company as a series of temporary log spurs between 1919 and 1929. It saw very little improvement since construction, and a lot of it was still laid with 60-lb rail.

Sad to see the line go...it was a gem.
