Post subject:  Heres a project from 2003 *PIC*
I've been wanting to share with everyone a project we did this fall, but I've had some technical problems getting the picture on our site.This engine has been on the Western Maryland Scenic and the Northern Central as Western Maryland #1689,before coming to the Cuyahoga Valley in December of 2002 where it is stored for it's owner but we do use it from time to time.
It has been a long time goal of the owner of this engine to return her to the way she looked when Alco rolled her out in 1954 for the Chicago North Western.In September we started work on it and the picture was taken the first week of October as the project was winding to a close, but before we had time to put the number boards in.

Well done, it really does have that factory fresh look to it. Love the older alcos, and more often than not you find them with 4 wheel trucks, which makes this one kinda neat.

Looks wonderful. How does she run? When I read an article in R&R about the creation of the WMSR it was interesting reading the history of this unit. Much like the MILW NW-2 at Monticello, its very interesting to see engines restored to their as built appearance.

Was D&H 4075 also at WMSR? I can not remember. I would like to know where this unit is is now.

Yes, D&H 4075 was on the WMSR (disguised as WM #199) The engine is currently stored in Owosso,MI lettered back to its orginal number, #1508. Look for it to be out in 2004.

1508 sounds like a Boston & Maine number...will she painted maroon and gold? thanks.

In the 1960s (I think), the D&H exchanged two regular freight RS-3s for two B&M RS-3s with steam generators. The B&M units had their original numbers for a time before re-numbered into the RS-3 empty slots. I believe the same was done on the B&M.

Actually, it was done in the mid-70's while the PA's were being cycled through M-K. Mid-70's...why that is 30 years ago !!!

She's a nice running engine, and you can't beat the sound of a 244 working. One of the interesting things about this engine is that CNW ordered it as a passenger engine, and we have a picture of it pulling a directors special when it was about a year old. Not many railroads ordered RSD-5s for passenger service.

No need to rub it in!

Maybe I'm a little slow on the uptake...does this mean that the 1508 will be lettered D&H?

(maybe it will be D&H on one side...B&M on the other...sort of a split personality. think of the photo-freight charter opportunities.)

She really looks awesome,,,thanks for posting the pic and info.
