On the South Simcoe Railway, an ex-CN route. CPR 136, a 4-4-0, last used in the Maritimes in 1960 in regular service. This loco previously had a rounded steel cab, that was backdated for the CBC's series on the building of the CPR. Was the steel cab removed or does it lurk under the wooden one?

Last I saw the steel cab it was sitting in my uncle's back yard, so, no, it is not under the wooden one.

Hmmm - I thought it was sitting in the weeds beside the engine shed at Tottenham. There is certainly a steel cab there - maybe it is a different one?

The steel cab is, indeed, in Tottenheam.

The wooden cab was constructed for the Canadian Broadcasting's eight-hour mini-series The National Dream filmed in 1973. The cab was designed under the supervision of the late Omer Lavallee to replicate the locomotive's original Rogers' cab.

There was much discussion after the filming was complete regarding the desirabilty of reinstalling the steel cab, but with the half-moon headlight installed, the locomotive bears a striking resemblance to its appearance immediately after its 1914 rebuilding and the vote was to leave the wooden cab in place.

That was 30 years ago. Not bad longevity for a movie prop!

The steel cab used on 136 in the later years is sitting behind the shop and formerly belonged to a CPR D-4.

The hostler has 136 banked and ready for service tomorrow and Sunday. It's snowing, which explains the white specks in the picture.
The engineer pictured in the "oiling around" scene is an Air Canada 747 captain when he's not behind the throttle of 136.

What's the status of 1057 at the moment?

Winterized & stored servicable.
Our shop can only hold one engine, so the other has to spend the winter outdoors beside the shop (properly prepped & tarped, of course).
