Are these things really safe? Anyone ever ride one? They look pretty fragile to me.

I've never ridden one myself, but according to the link below, they are very safe if manufactured correctly.

The things do in fact work. They can also land you in jail if ridden without proper authority. Just ask a certain Davidson County, Tennessee, physician who found himself "captured" on a middle Tennessee shortline railroad one Sunday a few years back. He thought we would all be at home that fateful Fall morning. Wrong!

Safety is relative.

I had an incident with one of these a few years ago. The trike operator insisted on his right to "drive" on our track. He actually followed a train for several miles! After 3 requests to remove his trike from our live rails, it was removed for him. Those vehicles must be pretty fragile because after it was taken off the track by an agitated crew member, it looked more like a curvacious baked good than a trike. I'd recommend more care in handling to other trainmen who find themselves in a similar situation.

Unfortunately a few irresponsible people can create a negative impression for all.
