Rocky Mountain Rocket eastbound out of Limon, Colorado in the 1960s. Tired-looking lead unit 652 would be the only CRI&P E unit saved. Today it is nicely restored in eastern Kansas, and save for a freight style pilot added after a wreck in the late-1950s, looks as good as when it rolled out of LaGrange.

Hey Bob,
The 652 was not the only CRIP E unit preserved. Unit 630, a slant-nose E-6, is under restoration at the same location in Kansas.

A 1942 shot near Limon with the 630, which was also saved (652 was the only newer E saved). The 630 is at the same museum, but needs a lot of work to look and run like this again.

The 630 was repainted back to this passenger scheme in 1988, I believe, and then displayed at Topeka Railroad Days that year. She does currently need some cosmetic work, but she is still a pretty old gal. While not able to power her own way, she is set up now as a cab control unit and can be m.u.'ed to our railway's other locomotives. It's odd to run her as cab control with no noise coming from the engine room(whisper cab:), you have to lean out the window to hear if the other locomotives are revving up when you notch out on the throttle. She also retains her #22 brake stand, which I understand is very rare these days.
