SP narrow gauge No. 8 at Sparks, Nevada. Was on display at Carson City for many years previously. Some years ago, I had a copy of the asbestos abatement contractor's proposal for this engine. In his drawings, the boiler was called the "train barrel" and the cab the "conductor's platform". Just the kind of guy you'd want to turn loose on your engine with a cutting torch!!

Isn't/wasn't there an effort to get one of the Espee narrow guage ten wheelers running lately?

The #18, the engine at Independance, California, is the one that has a group working to put it into operation. If I recall correctly the group is organzied as the Carson & Colorado Railroad. I once saw a website for the group, but cannot find it now.

My understanding is that #8 the engine at Sparks was being overhauled in Bakersfield when the diesel was delivered. The engine was completed cosmeticly and given to the State of Nevada.

#9 is the locomotive on display at Laws (near Bishop) California.
