I'm seeking any photographs of Norwood & St. Lawrence 2-6-0 No. 205 for a book project. This loco was sold by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1903 to the N&St.L after having run for a very brief time on the Quakertown & Eastern Ry in eastern Pa. It seems like virtually no one took pictures of this locomotive--all previous leads have ended up nothing. I'm also looking for the scrapping date of No. 205. Any positive leads will receive an acknowledgement in my forthcoming Q&E book (one of four books on various subjects in the works!).

Have any books ever been written on the N&St.L? Historical information is scant at best. A sister N&St.L engine (though not by design), No. 210, resides at Steamtown NHS in Scranton.

If you have any leads, either post on this board or feel free to contact me off-line.

Have a safe and healthy New Year!

Kurt:

I seem to recall that the Norwood & St. Lawrence was one of those railroads visited by David Morgan and Philip Hastings in one of their "end of steam' series in Trains Magazine many years ago. One series was "Steam across the Praires" I believe and the other was the more famous "Steam in Indian Summmer." I think the engine photographed for the series was N&StL 211, a sister to #210. Perhaps the 205 was still on the roster though and perhaps Hastings got a photo of it. Of course, maybe my memory is faulty and the N&StL was NOT part of one of those series after all.

Another thought is Malcolm McCarter. He has a tremendous amount of steam negatives and photos for sale. You might contact him to see if N&StL 205 is part of his inventory.

Your memory is still pretty good. According to The Mohawk that Refused to Abdicate, Kalmbach, 1975, Morgan and Hastings visited the Norwood and St. Lawrence in September, 1955. There they found Moguls ##210-211. By the time the article in Trains appeared, the work was being done by a pair of GE 70 tonners. see page 261. No mention or picture of any other steam on the line so I would infer the demise of #205 sometime prior to September, 1955.

Good luck Kurt. I've spent hours searching the internet, writing letters and making phone calls regarding this engine.
It's interesting to note that the Q&E has had far more written about it and photo's taken than that of the N&St.L. This despite the fact that the N&St.L had more trackage, ran more trains, owned more locomotives, and even outlasted the Q&E! It must have something to do with the more remoteness
of upper New York state. The only photo's I've been able to unearth are of their #210 (built 1923) and #211 (built 1926), both 2-6-0's. Many photo's exist of the 210. I also have a photo of the #207 (a 4-4-0) that most certainly was a stable mate of the 205. I am reasonably certain that the 205 may have lasted until being replaced by the larger and newer power, namely the 210 & 211.
Again, good luck, If I can assist you in your Q&E endeavours, let me know, you know where to reach me.
Happy New Year to all.

Kurt

You might want to talk to Gordon Chapell (sp?), he did the fairly extensive study on the Steamtown locomotives for the NPS. In his research on the 210 he might have come across some leads for you. I don't have any contact info, but IIRC he has posted here.

Kurt,

gordon does not post on the Internet but can be reached by e mail, chappelle_gordon_s@nps.gov.

He did do the write up on the engine in the Steamtown book.
I will photocopy the chapter if you need one for your research.

I was Freight Agent in Norfolk, Ny as my first job in railroads starting in 1975. No one had cleaned out the file cabinets since the depot was rebuilt after the fire in 1922. Every scrap of paper was saved that had anything to do with accounting. Files of random numbers with no references to anything.

I cleaned out a dumpster worth of useless paper. I was hoping to find something collectable by anyones definition. I do not remember any information on the 205. The only motive power records were the sale record of the 210/211 to a scrap yard in Watertown, New York, and the purchase of the two GE 70 ton replacements.

Unfortunately as this line was a subsidrary of St. Regis Paper Company, all corporate asset records were off the property. What could be useful are the Authority For Expenditure (AFE) files. A copy went to the ICC and are still at the US Government archives. Quite often I have found a photo in the AFE files at the railroad end, and on the couple of visits I made to the ICC copies.
