Post subject:  Lettering Help Please
MOT has a GE 25-ton diesel switcher built for the US Army (War Dept) in 1942 as USA #7765. We are trying to paint it as delivered, as its appearance has not changed. We have a shot of a sister engine to show us how the sides looked, but can anyone tell us if the rear of the cab was lettered and how?

Try contacting General Electric in Erie, PA. It has been a few years since I contacted them, but I believe they have a museum that houses a lot of historical information.

Are you sure you are not prohibited from painting US Army lettering on this loco? Many times when the military divests itself of equipment, it stipulates that the recipient is not to re-letter it for the former owner.

Just wondering if you checked this aspect.

I have also heard of this potential restriction but it seems I saw a nicely done unit at Spencer. They might be able to help with your letterring questions, Ron. And I doubt there are lettering police out there trying to bust us if we wish to restore such equipment for historical purposes and to honor the men in uniform serving us now. I am sure your local Congressman or Senator would provide some help in getting a waiver on this policy if one is needed.

Maybe you do not want to see a half track still painted US Army wrestling you for space on the morning expressway commute, but a railway locomotive captive in a Museum?? YES!!

Try contacting the New Jersey Museum of Transportation. They own Ex US Army GE 25ton #7751 which I believe was built Oct. 1942 and is painted in black with US lettering.

That is usually the case with military equipement. But usually you can get offical permission for a museum to use military designations. In this case, I would recommend contacting the Army Corp of Engineers who run the Army RRs. Here is the URL for the Public Affairs Office which is a good place to start.
