Quote:
The Cranbrook [British Columbia] History Centre has begun the process of deaccessioning nine of the railcars in its current collection of 29.

The cars have been determined to be historically significant, but beyond the resources of the Centre to maintain of restore, the CHC said in a press release Monday.

More at the link--but not a list of which nine are being made available yet.

Kudos to the CHC for making a good decision. It's not easy to make a decision like that, but at least they have come to the realization that their available resources do not permit them to properly maintain these items and made the decision to allow them to go to other museums that have the capacity to take them on.

This page contains links to PDF files of all the preserved rail equipment in Canada. It is not 100% perfect but I find it to be reasonably accurate, and the Society does appreciate updates.

I don't think anything has changed at Cranbrook since 2014, and for those unfamiliar with Canadian geography their equipment list is in the BC-NWT-YT file.

I visited the museum last year and have an educated guess as to what they will be deaccessioning, but I'll keep the speculation to myself for now.

What's the story with the Tender from CPR 3100?

I thought that interesting as well, as the 3100 and sister 3101 (CP's only 4-8-4s) are both still around.

Tenders did get swapped around a lot on most roads, and it's no surprise that either 4-8-4 might not have its original tender, but it is interesting that at least one original tank is still around.

Having recently moved, all my notes and books are a jumble. I will no doubt get in trouble for saying anything, but the tenders could have been swapped when No. 3100 was converted to oil. I have such a recollection. I'd like to say that it may have even come off the multi-pressure No. 8000, but won't, because that will really set the chins to waggin'! :-)

Interesting. When SP converted Baldwin 4-10-2 60000 to oil firing to demonstrate over Donner Pass, instead of converting the tender to oil, then back to coal, they assigned an SP oil tender for the demonstration. 60000 got its coal tender back for the return East (and still has it)

Presumably they left the Duplex stoker in place as well.

Perhaps CPR did the same with 3100. Weren't 3100 and 3101 the regular power on 21-22, the heavy overnight mail, express and sleeper trains between Montreal and Toronto?

Further to the tender.
Two shots I took of it at the BCRail steam shop in the 90's.
A standard CPR 12,000 gal. tender. (That's 14,412 US gal.)
As used by many of CP's larger loco's.

Yes, off #3100, when that engine was converted to an oil burner.
Then used behind the "big hook" at Vancouver's Drake St. roundhouse for many years.

Was then acquired by Bob Swanson, to extend the operating range of the Royal Hudson, then being returned to service.
Used for a number of years behind 2860, as a canteen car #2860B. Had couplers installed at both ends.
Did some cross-Canada trips, and even down to San Francisco for BC Government tourism promotions.
When no longer required for the BCR steam operation, was gifted to Cranbrook.
Was in usable, but tired condition.

BTW, the Big Hook still survives at WCRA museum at Squamish BC.
Hope it finds a good home. Would be interesting to see it re-united at Squamish.

Thanks to Al Broadfoot for the backstory.

Cranbrook History Centre has at long last been able to built a shelter over some of their cars. I hope the rest will get sheltered soon!

It is a special kind of museum; with passenger cars being the center of attention, instead of steam or Diesel locomotives.

Old Smokey,

Are those other 2 tenders in photo of spare water tenders too? Any numbers?

Yes, it is unique in that way.

This link gives a quick overview as to why the museum is downsizing, with a photo of the new covered shed.

The 7000 gal. black tender was originally behind CPR 3716.
It was replaced when that engine was rebuilt by the BC Rail steam team.
A larger tender was then fitted, as seen in the photo.
It greatly increased the operating range for excursion service.
Can't find my notes with the details. Will look for them, and get back to you.

Dennis.
