Gentlemen, I'm doing a history project trying to document the whereabouts of any and all extant Soo Line passenger cars. I have information that states that two Soo Line coaches, 978 and 978, went east to Cooperstown NY about 1962 or so. These cars were built by AC&F in 1912, and are steel, with wood roofs and wide letter boards covering the location of the original "Gothic" sash. These are short cars with four wheel trucks, and neither was ever air conditioned. Does anyone know if they still exist? Where are they now? Thanks, Dennis Storzek dstorzek@elnet.com |

Those cars may be at the Delaware Ostego headquarters in Cooperstown. I saw a picture of an old steamer and some coaches on display there. |

It's "Delaware Otsego Corporation." They are the parent company of the New York, Susquehanna & Western. kevin.r.gillespie@verizon.net |

I've also been trying to track these elusive cars down. Both Soo Line coaches were purchased in c.1961-1962 by Byron Andrews, owner of the York Southern RR, a short-lived excursion operation that leased trackage rights on the Maryland & Pennsylvania RR and ran trips in 1962-1963. I have some photos of the cars in service with M&P diesel No. 81 at Delta, Pa., in 1963. Andrews also owned an ex-Tennessee Central wooden caboose, and used Lowell William's ex-RDG coach No. 1424, now on the NH&I. I have a slide of both Soo Line coaches stored on the Careva siding at York in 1964; I believe they left for NY sometime between 1964 and 1968, but not exactly sure when. Perhaps the C&CV website might shed some more light on the Soo Line cars; if I am not mistaken the line is now owned and operated by the local NRHS chapter. I think these cars went to original DO operation, which was the western portion of the NYC's Ulster & Delaware branch, east out of Oneonta, NY, about 1967-68. The right of way was taken by NY State for I-88, and the DO relocated to the D&H's Cooperstown Branch, slightly north of town, with the "settlement" funds. A young volunteer at the start of the DO was one Walter Rich, now NYSW-DO President, and buyer of two Chinese 2-8-2s. hpincus@mindspring.com |

Yes, I know he lists an e-mail address, but sometimes things on paper get better responses, because there is hard copy to hand someone. I'll report back if I learn anything. The two passenger cars presently parked by the DO/NYSW offices in Cooperstown, NY are a former Lehigh Valley Black Diamond 6 wheel parlour car and an ex NYC/D&H/EL (maybe DL&W as well) business car once used by William White. The Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley presently uses three DL&W coaches and a former RF&P coach (converted into a diner before CACV onwership). A former D&H RPO was restored cosmetically for future use as station/boarding facility. Under restoration now is an ex D&H 6 axle coach. Passenger equipment awaiting restoration is another D&H 6 axle coach, another D&H RPO, and an ex PRR Pullman "Espyville". And we are in the process of moving an 1870s/1880s wooden D&H passenger car (a coach). Joshua LRHS / CACV |
