Probably not. Some railroads still have the boilermaker craft. Typically, they do heavy welding (wreck repair, etc.) and steel fabrication, as well as maintaining shop boilers and heating systems. The CSX force at Riverside in Baltimore that maintains MARC commuter equipment has an electrician and a boilermaker sharing the foreman job on day trick. Still a current posting on CSX. He is by trade a welder and heavy pipefitter. However, in 1975, a locomotive boiler did receive class repairs at Riverside Shop, numbered 2101. . . . Steve Zuiderveen SZuidervee@aol.com |

Any locomotive shop of any size has boilermakers or boilermaker-welders. They handle repair and fabrication work on heavy items, such as snowplows, end sheets, frames, fuel tanks, handrails, etc. There are still cab carpenters, too. Those are carmen who handle window glass replacment and repairs to cab interiors, such as flooring, seats, etc. |
