Journal pads

Does any one of the name of a supplier of journal pads? I need 16 #8's and our supply is down to 3!! Any help would be most appriciated.

I'm trying to track down the Hennessy Mfg. Co. of Chambersburg, Pa. and pass the information along to this group. The founder made his fortune using the "latteral motion" (slight side to side play) of steam locomotive drivers to power mechanical lubricators. The decendents diversified into "Slidewell" boxcar door openers (a large hand wheel driving a gear down a rack) and journal box lubricator pads, optionally pre-lubricated!

Hennessey pads are no longer available - for some years now. Along with other fallen flags of lube pads including Atlas, Premier, Journapack. The pads from Unity are like wooly sheep, with foam packing inside the sewn cloth bag and are available pre oiled or dry. We like them dry since the oil seems to start the clock ticking on the foam breaking down and disintegrating. It is a little more work to install the dry pad and you have to keep topping up the journal as the initial oil is absorbed, but the shelf life of a new pad is much greater. Only certain 'standard' sizes are available so we continue to wind wool yarn into 'waste bundles' and hand pack journals on some equipment.

You may want to read the AAR Lubrication Manual. It has instructions on soaking new pads before installation. It's important that the fibers are saturated with oil before you put pressure on them otherwise you may not get good lubrication across the whole pad.

Mike Hennessy just returned my call. He closed the Railway Parts business in 1995, and is now a consultant in the same town, Chambersburg, Pa.

So, that's why we liked Hennessy's product better - Unity's disintegrated for NHIR, also!

Well, we do soak and squeeze new dry pads before installing, maybe even starting the day before. I took that as a given, and did not mean to omit that step. That is what I referred to as being more work with the use of a dry pad.
