Marty - Thanks for the info. These engines are of interest to our new group, the Western Virginia RR Preservation Society, due to their local history and proximity to our core members. We had just started discussing them on our Yahoo group, and I was trying to gather some info on what a scrap value would be. Thanks for sharing your estimate with us. I was under the impression that 18K was a pie in the sky number. Good point also about the dreaded Asbestos. Judging by the pictures, if the saddle tanks are still on, it's probably still there.
We are also way to young to even really consider (dream about) any kind of equipment aquisition, but it's something to think about.

Look up RSI (EMD's shortline parts distributor) and give them a call. While I don't think they have the item in question, they may be able to direct you to an outfit that does. I seem to recall that there was a small start-up company (former EMD technical people) that may have acquired much of the earlier schematic library from EMD.

To be fair, one should realize that in many cases, locomotive wiring tends to be modified over time-such that the as-built prints may be of little use.

I have a similar story about my fried Jack Taylor. In 1994, when NS Steam went away I was only 16 years old. So all of my time around NS Steam was when I was really young. In 1989, I encountered Jack Taylor for the first time. What a person! If you were ever around NS Steam you probably remember him. He always was wearing a smile and smoking a pipe and most of the time he could be found in the right hand seat of 611 or 1218. Jack showed me around the cab that day and everytime I would see him after that he called me by name. That really made a big impression on me--For someone who saw so many people during the year to take time to remember who I was and always say hi!

I miss that part of the NS Steam program more than I do the locomotives.

Uh OH! This is not a good sign! If this guy is the stereotypical scrap dealer, they're gonna be razor blades as soon as he has enough acetylene to do the job. He wants a totally unrealistic figure,and if nobody comes up with it, they're cut up! He probabably needs to fill up a trailer
to whoever he sells his scrap to. It doesn't matter HOW historic the pieces are, he thinks that if you're that crazy, you'll pay, and he can feed his dogs steak if he sells them. Sorry, that's what you're dealing with!

I have the same concern. I am going to call the group today and try to get a sense of where they're at. At the very least, I want to make sure they have a copy of Conrad's Displayed Steam Locomotives--Their Care and Maintenance.

Wait a second, I heard in one of the above threads that shes out of service. Now is this routine maintenece/inspection or is it more serious that than.

I am 16 years old and ever since the first time i laid eyes on a steamer ive been hooked ever since. Yet i am in a little bit of a dilemma, I want to get involved with steam locos more seriously but i dont have a railroad within at least 70 miles of me that has anything to do with steam. What should i try to do?
