Post subject:  Milwaukee F display
F unit painted in Milwaukee Road colors on display at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, apparently with some cars. Anyone have more photos, info?

From a 2000 issue of "On Milwaukee":

"Even if you don't know its official name, you likely have at least heard of the Great Northern (E. Stewart at S. Hilbert, take Kinnickinnic to Stewart, just north of Bay St., and turn east onto Stewart). Also known as "the train bar" because it's located in a lovely old art deco railroad club car, Great Northern offers cocktails in an extremely unique setting. Take a trip back in time to the glorious and urbane days of rail travel. Just be sure not to wander in wearing torn jeans or a t-shirt, as you may be turned away by the man in charge, who is a stickler for etiquette and the dress code."

Said bar has apparently closed, according to a couple other sources. A search does turn up a listing of one car in question, GN 1292 "Going To The Sun Mountain", a 1950 2-roomette/buffet-lounge-obs, at the same location. Background photos show a Milwaukee car coupled to it and a MILW caboose behind/in front of those two.

But nothing of a loco.........

GN "Going-To-The-Sun Mountain" is in the bar "yard" along with a Milwaukee Road diner, Milwaukee 8-6-4 sleeper "Jefferson River", a Milwaukee Road baggage RPO and the FP7. On an adjacent track are a couple more headend cars and a heavyweight car. There is also a small industrial critter that resides there. When I get home tonight, I will go through my slides to determine the other equipment numbers (diner, RPO, FP7, etc).

I had a drink and some pretzels there once. I was invited by a friend - but it seemed to be a public operation with limited hours and a somewhat exclusive atmosphere. IIRC there is some connection with ex-MILW executives and this collection of equipment.

The baggage-RPO is the 2159 and the diner is 170. I didn't record the number of the F unit, unfortunately.

Quite an old topic. Does anybody know of the whereabouts of the Great Northern observation car that was part of this trainset? It moved around a bit and supposedly ended up in Kansas City Union Station.
I will be in KC this fall and would like to see it if possible.
Thanks for any help or leads.

Going-To-The-Sun Mountain did indeed go to KCUS for a time, but is now owned by Ben Ringnalda, who also owns sister car St. Nicholas Mountain.
