I (should) tend to regard certain things with some suspicion-moreso after being gullible enough to need to seek confirmation about the fictitious disposal of US ARMY RSD-1Â’s the other day, but I think this might be real off the Alconews yahoo group. RS-3Â’s 603 & 606 appear to be future razor blades-still marking with a question mark.

These RS-3Â’s were former D&H- I think one was 4075?? Too bad- wouldÂ’ve been nice working for a living or on the Delaware Lackwanna or on display @ RRMPA as example of what vanquished only challengers in PA of Ararat.

These RS-3Â’s were listed on ozarkmountainrailcar for sale until a while back, but have been removed completely, unlike the GE-U18B, #1801 and other units marked as sold on the thumbnail with the hyperlink to the larger pictures and unit data removed- so one must assume OMRC did not sell these units.

Did some checking, 603 is former D&H 4091 and 606 was originally Lehigh & Hudson River 3. A shame these RS-3's couldn't find a home in a museum but you can't save 'em all.

Hello All,

1) Were these engines owned by Dan Behr, who stored four of his E units at the same site?

2) Are scrap prices high now right now, or are scrap futures rising? What would be the price for the raw metal irregardless of the condition?

-- Former LH&R 3 is the last surviving RS-3 from this railroad. Another RS-3 from this unit was being cannibalized to the frame by the Delaware & Lackawanna in Scranton over the past year.

I know of at least two complete but rather unservicable RS-3's that are owned by preservation groups/museums. Does anybody here think it would be worth it to suggest a swap that would preserve the running units?

A coupla thoughts...

Indeed the price of scrap steel has been trending upward over the last months-fueled by strong overseas demand. One can only guess what effect that state-of-affairs could/will have on railroad preservation-but I digress.

Fact is-at 30K apiece-those RS-3's were priced WAY too high. Even 15K would be a stretch-all things considered-and the price of scrap not withstanding. On the face of it, it appears that some of the would-be sellers of old rolling stock are thinking in terms of collectable cars when they set pricing. "Old" and "rare"=big $$$$. Don't think it works that way-but I solicit your comments.

Below is a link expaining some of the reasons for rising costs. BTW if you didn't know it, the $200/ton prices are for prepared scrap at the buyers gate, so be prepared to take a little less if it takes more prep or is contaminated.

Look at this blip as a chance to get rid of all that extra junk that we old timers managed to thoughtlessly gather ... make hay while the sun shines ...start thinking like businessmen not club members ... did I miss anybody ????????????
Time to get those #1 heavy melting traction parts out of the barn and off to the junky !!!!!!!

L&HR 3 is not the last survivor. Nevada Northern RR Museum has former L&HR 13 in their collection. Delaware-Lackawanna 204 is ex-L&HR 4.

Absolutely not. Dan/Omni/whoever you want to call him had no involvement with these locos. I at one point had the business card of the broker that bought these RS3's; it wasn't Dan.

*Did said RS3 come out of Baltimore at one point? I remember "Jimbo" being parked near Consoliodated Coal in Canton for years, and remembering that it was a L&HR RS3. I thought the Anthracite Railway Historical Society guys got said loco.
