I've been inside these units and it amazes me how tight-quarters they are inside. Can't imagine either being an engineer or a fireman rocketing down the PRR looking out of the small windshield. Neat engines! One of the GG1s might be leaving the Jct. this year. Stay tuned!! Joshua |

> Derelict GG1s at Cooperstown Junction, NY. I recall in the early 1980s, when I worked for US Railway Associaton, riding GG1's on "schedule performance monitoring trips." Leaving Pot Yard in pairs and trios, we went regularly via the Port Road line to Harrisburg (PYEN), Edgemore (PYED, I think), and into the New York area (PYOI). They were cramped indeed, made a lot of noise banging along through switches, but could run like the wind. 'Tis sad to see a few rotting, but am thankful the strategic and collections plans of several museums have allowed representatives to be preserved. |

In 2001 a fellow and several helpers scraped and painted the roof and one nose and had started on the other nose. They had brought in a diesel a tested the brakes and were working to get them in line for transport to CT. They even had a detailed web site with photos of the work. Then, all of a sudden, they all seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth, including the web site. The other unit is 4934 (PRR 4917). I beleive 4932/4909 is the same unit that is now to go to the Henry Ford Museum (per postings on some board). Now if some one wants 4917 or 4876 in Baltimore. We (LRHS/CACV) brought our leased ex O&W 116 NW-2 down to the Jct. to pick up cars from the interchange and did an air test on PRR 4909. I wouldn't doubt that that was the first time an O&W unit coupled up to a NYO&W unit! Neat! It was a bit a bit funny when we put air to it that the windshield wiper blades came on. This is indeed the unit scheduled to go to MI. PRR 4917 is privately owned and probably won't be leaving the area for a long time to come, if ever. Joshua |
