Any recommendations for Chicago North Western Caboose Red for a wooden caboose. I am also looking for the correct interior color for a Chicago North Western wooden bay window caboose.

While we are on the subject of Caboose Red we are looking for the right mix for Frisco Caboose Red. And please dont tell me to find a piece of exesting paint sand it down and have a match done. I have tried that and the lab at Sherman Williams Paint here in Wichita gave us a color that has way to much purple in it.

Just as for Pullman Green or Boxcar Red, I doubt there is any generic mix or formula - it varied greatly over time, by road, and through effects of aging.

IRM finished a wood bay window CNW caboose a few years ago and we have a color match formula for a present day urethane enamel. If I had to desribe it, it is a fairly 'warm' red. Plan on applying several finish coats since reds are notorious for being somewhat transparent with resulting poor opacity. If you are interested in that formula, please contact me off list and I will exhume it from our files.

As one lister said, red is notoriously bad for covering. Also, your "color matching" programs have problems with what are called "deep" tones. Check first if the company even offers a deep tone base to start with. Our museum has gone through 3 sources now for paint as one company after another in our area has dropped deep tone bases. One problem with sanding to get an original is if you get down to a primer coat or the wood the program incorporates that color into its attempt to match, hence the purple tone.

There are generally two ways to mix a mineral red. Traditionally it was iron oxides possibly with a bit of lamp black, or in the case of a brighter caboose red, with Indian red or a similar pigment. Today many of the color matching systems will mix it starting with purples. This can produce a matching paint color when fresh, but as it fades, it will go purple, while historic paints would have gone pink. Finding a paint shop that will listen and mix starting with red oxides, even synthetic red oxides will help. We have a small chain here with 4 stores, one store in the chain always starts with purple, the other when asked will start with the iron oxide pigments. You can take a wild guess which one gets our business.
