On the Track: New OrleansÂ’ First Women Streetcar Operators
Join The National D-Day Museum as it salutes the women who operated the New Orleans streetcars during World War II. From 1943 until early in 1946, more than 200 women and teenaged girls helped to keep New OrleansÂ’ streetcars and buses moving during a period when war production and gasoline rationing forced unprecedented numbers of New Orleanians to rely on public transit. Local documentary filmmaker and scholar Michael Mizell-Nelson provides a brief overview followed by a discussion featuring a panel of New OrleansÂ’ first women streetcar operators.
