This month's RyPN article on Mexican Railroading got me thinking about a little Mexican loco that I've lost track of. I first saw it at the San Diego Railroad Museum, and last saw it at Shop Services in Mt. Pleasant, IA. I'm not sure of it's actual identity, if I remember correctly it was lettered FCdeZy #1, or something similar. I was told at one point it may have spent some time at IRM. Anyone know where it might be now? There's no mention of it on the Midwest Central Railroad website, so I'm guessing it's moved on to another "home". Boyd bowens@rypn.org |

Is it a 2-6-0? It sounds like the engine that left IRM for a shopping mall in Colorado, then when to the now defunt Prairie Expo center in WOrthington MN that is supposed to be going to the End-O-the -Line musum in Currie MN. pdalleska@stuhrmuseum.org |

The loco was sold in 1988 by the Museum to a rebuild outfit in the midwest. The promised a good home for it. It was a 2-8-0 3' guage. The rumor mill has it taken apart and not put back together - did it become another "lost" locomotive? Jim Pacific Southwest Railway Museum |

Shop Services was located in Mt. Pleasant, IA. They went out of business when the founder, Stan Matthews passed away in 1994. Boyd bowens@rypn.org |

Though I don't know the engine's current whereabouts, I think it was Coahuila y Zacatecas No. 1, a 2-8-0 that sat at about three sites in Southern California before going to Iowa. I think it is one of about five CyZ engines extant. CyZ 10 at Puebla, Puebla ryarger@rypn.org |

Boyd is talking about FCyZ 2-8-0 #1; Baldwin (Burnham)/15435/1897, 3ft guage. I still have it listed at Midwest Central, so I am no help here. You are thinking about Ferrocarril de Salavery y Trujillo 2-6-0 #13, Baldwin (Burnham)/3781/1876, 3ft guage. It was at the Junk-Tique Antique Store, Frisco, CO; then the Prairie Expo Museum, Worthington, MN; now at the End-O-Line RR Park & Mus, Currie, MN. I know this isn't a complete listing of Mexican steam locomotives on display but does anyone know if: 1. Any other of the Baldwin standard gauge class GR-28 2-8-0's of 1946 were preserved besides the #212 listed? There were 10 of these handsome Consolidations built late in the steam era (numbers 211-220.) 2. Mexico imported a number of second hand locomotives from Class 1 carriers in the U.S. including C&NW, NKP, FEC, the original Norfolk Southern, IC, etc. Were ANY of these ex-U.S. class 1 locomotives preserved? CyZ #1 is still in Mount Pleasant at the Midwest Central RR. The MCRR bought it in the late 80's. It arrived pretty well striped and is in basicaly the same condition now. Some inspections have been done on it and it will need major boiler work or replacement along with removal and repair of the sadle. It is a neat engine and many of us would like to see it run someday. cjvanwinkle@hotmail.com |

The 2-8-0 was one of three locomotives brought up from Mexico in 1965. They came up from the CyZ along with some fright cars. Also imported were some passenger cars from the Yucatan. The intention was to operate a steam powered line in a county part near Pomona, California. This project never got going and the equipment was dispersed. The three engines initially went to a local chain of restaurants called "The loose caboose." The engines were: #1 2-8-0 BLW #15435 8/97 #6 4-6-0 BLW #24252 5/04 #12 2-8-0 BLW #35990 1/11 When the restaurants closed the engines went various ways. In time the passenger cars went to the Huckleberry. I believe the freight cars and the caboose also went there.
