In this months RyPN Article on Mexican railroading, there is a little info and a couple of photos of EMD GA8 diesels. These are interesting little locos (to me at least).
Were they unique to Mexico, or were there other North American railroads that used them?

The GA8's were indeed unique to Mexico: 17 to NdeM, 3 on the Coahuila & Zacatecas, and 2 on the United Rys. of Yucatan.

A somewhat similar (875 hp vs. 800) G8 model saw service on CN--five standard gauge and six 3'6" for Newfoundland.

90 G12's (1310 hp) went to NdeM, and two to the London & Port Stanley in Canada.

24 G16's (1600 hp) were bought by NdeM in 1958-60.

You didn't ask, but CN/Newfoundland also used 47 NF210's by EMD, 1200 hp.

In other exports used domestically, GE had the U6B, used by the Hampton & Branchville in S.C. and the Santa Maria Valley in Ca.

A G[A]8 has of late been working a cement plant west of Denver, near Rocky Flats, whether of Canadian or Mexican origin, I cannot tell..
