Would anyone have an Official Railway Equipment Register for 1927 or later? I would like to know owner of GARE 9032 a reefer and more importantly, was it in assigned service and to/from where? Thanks for any help.

Well, I have a 1938 one and GARE does not appear in the index of that one. But, General American Refigerator Express Company using GARX appears under General American Transportation Corporation.

GARX 9000-9325 are listed as regfrigerator cars with an interior length of 33'2" between ice tanks; active number of cars in series is not listed. No other information except for additional dimensions.

Could you please do me a favor and check your 1938 ORER for a Pittsburg, Shawmut & Northern rarity? They bought 19 used boxcars in 1932, one of which was a 1 1/2 door automobile car... no one seems to know the number. Do any of the PS&N 9600-series cars show a wider door opening than the rest? Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, it does not answer your question. In fact, it does not show 9600 series cars at all! The entry carrying the date of April, 1938, lists the following equipment:

Gondola, steel underframe 6000-6499 - 12 cars
Hopper, steel 7000-7239 - 117 cars
Box, Steel underframe 9700-9799 - 100 cars
Box, steel underframe 9900-9949 - 46 cars
Flat, steel underframe 408-422 - 11 cars

Work equipment 200-406 - 29 cars
Business car 200 - 1 car
Caboose 183-193 - 10 cars

Pass & Bagg (under 60 ft) 126-133 - 3 cars
Pass & Bagg (under 70 ft) 135 - 1 car
Gsoline Motor 90 - 1 car

So maybe the 9600 serries had come and gone by this time.

Thanks very much. Lee Cory's book says those cars were "gone by 1940" and I guess we can now also say they were gone by 1938. I also appreciate the roster listing!

I have 1971, 1976, 1984, and 1992 ORERs and would be glad to help anyone on this board if these newer books help.

Wonder if you could look up something for me in your `38 ORER? We have a AC&F single dome riveted tank car (built in July of 1919) at our museum with reporting marks of WCHX and carrying the number 1114. We know that WCHX stands for the Walter C. Haffner Company, a leasing firm. The car also however, shows what appears to be a previous marking: PTCX 1103. I wonder if you could check to see if you show a listing for PTCX and what that company might be. I don't know when this car was transferred from PTCX to Haffner but evem if #1103 was not on the PTCX roster in 1938, just giving us the company would be a big help. Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Well, no listing for PTCX. There is a PTX and a PTLX. PTX is Pennsylvania Tank Line (see Pennsylvania-Conley Tank Line, a division of General American Transportation Corp.) [Other lines listed for Pennsylvania-Conley are CYCX and TCX]

PTLX is Peerless Transit Line (see Canadian Oil Compnay Limited and The National Refining Co.)

Now, looking in the 1951 issue there is a listing for WCHX - Walter Heffner Company. And a serries (1107-1140) where your car would belong. No listing for PTCX.

Any ideas?

Brian:

Thanks for checking. Two ideas. First, PTCX may have been in existance prior to 1938 (perhaps the car was even originally built for them back in 1919.) I guess I would need someone with an older ORER to check that out. The second idea is that perhaps I misread the third letter in the reporting marks as a C instead of an L. It is rather faded and covered by the later WCHX 1114 reporting marks. When I get to the museum this Saturday I will crawl under and look at the letters again (they are located on the frame.) I will let you know what I find out if you are interested.

The HO scale model freight car kit firm Westerfield has scanned selected issues of ORER and is making them available in .tif or .jpg format on CD. The years offered are 1885, 1888, 1892, 1897, 1900, 1905, 1919, 1930, 1935, 1940. 1950, 1955, 1959, 1965, and various PRR listings from even more years.

For most of these the price is $20 per CD plus shipping. I have not yet seen these myself.
