If memory serves, that is an early 1850s plantation engine that is written up in a White article as the oldest existing steam engine manufactured in North America.

You are correct, that is "La Junta", built by Rogers Ketchum & Grosvenor (although one of my "picture books" claim Richard Norris & Son) in 1843; and on display in Central Station lobby in Havana.

The 4-2-0 "Pioneer", built by Baldwin as their #184 was also built in 1843. Both of these are pictured on my "Surviving World Steam Locomotive" CD-ROM.

And I have "Atlantic" and "John Hancock", the Grasshopper 0-4-0s on display in the B&O Railroad Musuem as having been built in Mt. Claire in 1836. Is that correct, or are they newer engines back dated to look like older engines?

Well, kinda all of the above. The real Atlantic was built in 1832, but scrapped. In 1892, the 1836 engine “Andrew Jackson” was rebuilt and cosmetically altered at Mount Clare to appear as the “Atlantic”. The “John Hancock” is original other than legitimate in-service alterations, built in 1836 and used until 1892.

The La Junta is now located in the lobby of the Christina Station of the Ferrocarril del Cuba. It was moved to the new railroad museum that is part of the station. This was done between 2002 and early 2003. The station has Noroeste Railway cast in the front cornice work over the Christina name.

I saw this in Feb 2003 during a TUT tour of Cuba. this may have been one of the last legal train enthusist tour for a while. Since US and Cuban relations deteriated after this tour in March 2003.

They also have a 1878 BLW 0-4-2T #1112 that is still steamed up at the Ruben Martinez Villena mill. This mill is located near Matanzas
