By the time I got to the Graham County Railroad in 1975-76, everything was over. Sn 3256 (1925), sn 2804 (Brimstone #36), Sn 2147 (Little River) and Sn 3299 (1926) were still on the property. Apparently Sn 3241 (Conasauga River) was already moved to Texas. As I understand it, only the 3256, 3241, and 3299 were actually operated on the Graham County Railroad, the 2147 was for display, and the 2804 was to be restored. I had not thought about these Shays for years until I accidently found that the 3256 had been restored by the NCTM. More research showed that the 3804 is now at Cass, the 2147 is on display in Tennessee, and 3241 is on display in Texas. Looks like even the remains of 3299 are still around. Is there a web site or book that would give the history of the Graham County, Bear Creek SR, and all the locomotives? Or would someone be willing to post what you know? Thanks.

And we'll have "Shays in the Snowbirds" in print... most of it is in the PC now.... just needs some rewriting, editing, some picture editing, a few more pictures and off to the publisher.

Until then...and this is complicated... check out www.nctrans.org... click under events/exhibits... go to rolling stock... select steam locomotives... obviously pick 1925... on its page... there is a detailed history at the bottom... enjoy.

FYI: TVRM is "Shay-less." #36 is at Cass; #35 is in California.

Thanks, that is an excellent article and told me almost everything I wanted to know, except I'd like to know what engines ran during what seasons. Looking foward to your book. Thanks again.

What is the status of Sn 2366 (Brimstone #35) that went to CA? Understand it is completely apart, what are plans? Have photos of #35 & #36 in service, very pretty engines.

Chuck, I'm guessing you're asking about the tourist years, and if so, here is what I know: 1966--1926 on excursions, 1925 on freight.
1967--1923 and 1926 on excursions as available. 1925 on freight.
1968--1923 on excursions, 1926 out due to ICC boiler condemnation, 1925 on freight until wreck in july. 1926 reactivated on emergency certificate until 1925 repaired that fall (using a lot of 1926 to make one complete engine).
1969--1923 on excursions, 1925 on freight. 1926 cannibalized.
1970. 1923 on excursions, 1925 on freight.

1923 was sold to Oregon Pacific & Eastern in March 1972 and 1925 was used to move her to interchange.

1925 did the honors after that. Brimstone 36 arrived in Sept. 1973 and some work was done to her but she never made it north of Bear Creek and sat there until sent moved to Cass.

When I was in Sacramento in 1999, the owner of 35 was around asking about the value of "used Shays" that are in disassembled state. I assume he was thinking of selling. Sure would be good to get her back to Tenn... hint, hint, Steve and Mark!

Hey Jim, I thought that 1925 wrecked in '68 with a tourist train. I can't tell you where I read it, but it was either an old Trains or L&RP Mag. So was it actually a freight wreck instead?

Thanks - Mike

When she wrecked, the '25 pulling two boxes, two pulpwood racks and one caboose. The train had stopped at Bear Creek, picked up about a dozen tourists to ride a "mixed train" to Topton and back. There were no tourist cars on the wrecked train.

Well, I've got photos of the 35 rotting away at TVRM, apparently they weren't interested in her when they had her. Maybe she will go to Cass, would be nice to see the 35 & 36 back in steam (Lettered for Brimstone RR!)

I think 36 has been at Cass now close to 15 years, maybe more, and still has yet to see work. She's old, light (70-tons) and will need a top to bottom rebuild. That's not to say it won't happen, but it's just not the priority there. From everything I've heard, Cass' ideal Shay is 90-tons or more... better adhesion on those grades. Jim

yeah, 35 needs to be at cass where they'll take care of her. have you seen the 36 lately? ha! from what I hear southern owned 35 & 36 after taking over the brimstone and just stored the shays in chattanooga and they were never owned by tvrm.

What you have heard is indeed correct. Neither 35 or 36 had time to "rot" at TVRM as they were only there for a relatively short time after their removal from service following Southern's purchase of the Brimstone RR.

On related note...

Jim,

How much you reckon a disassembled 70-ton shay is worth?

One that needs rebuilding: $20k would be the blue book figure.
