Dear RYPN'ers; I have to make a new nipple for a hydrostatic lubricator (and probably a bunch of other small fittings). Is there a spec for bronze that's acceptable? My gut feeling, would be to use a free machining bearing bronze - SAE 660 but basically anything without too much zinc. (I think 660 is mainly copper and tin, with a bit of lead thrown in for machinability and a trace amount of zinc) I use mainly cast bronze "gunmetal" from england for my 1:16 scale stuff, but this is of unknown composition. The ASME Code requires bronze pressure parts to be made of SB-61, or SB-62. These alloys are approved for specific temperature ratings, and have identifiable strengths at various elevated temps. High lead alloys, like 660, are not a good choice. HMSC |

What I come up with is as follows. SB-61 and SB-62 are for cast fittings. SB-61 has a maximum temperature allowed of 550° Fahrenheit, C92200 Navy M Bronze castings. SB-62 has a maximum temperature allowed of 406° Fahrenheit, C83600 Red Brass (LG2 Leaded Gunmetal) castings. So what should we use for the non-cast alloys?
