Last time I was upstairs in the B&OM library, they used one system called "bookshelves" and another called "file drawers". Not that the Maryland Rail Heritage Library doesn't use the same thing right now......... LNER4472-NOSPAM-@bcpl.net |

Digitizing the collection is indeed a great step forward since, among other things, it should eventually make the archives accessible on the Internet. In that way the museum will make itself far more useful to researchers, both to its benefit and ours. Having made extensive online use of the Cleveland Union Terminal Collection at Cleveland State Univ. and the Fred Harvey Collection at the Univ. of Arizona, I look forward -- if I live long enough -- to what the B&O Museum may produce. One hopes, however, that in the rush to the new world, the "bookshelves" and "file drawers" will be preserved as they are too. Several major library systems (e.g., Los Angeles)have already found that putting their records on a computer system and dumping the original card files was a huge disaster, as both the hardware and software became obsolete and could not be practically replaced. I had my own little experience in this area when, less than ten years ago, a publisher asked me to edit and revise a railroad history book. I did so, but in the meantime the publisher was bought out and the new owner decided not to go ahead with the book. Thinking I'd be foresighted and preserve the material in case someone else came along, I kept the original disks. But since then both the disks and word processing program that was used are obsolete, and the material in this form is virtually useless. (Fortunately I did keep a hard copy.)
