Very Nice photos! I have a question though, I have always heard that tube ends are annealled before installation. What is the reason for hardening them?

Yes, those are all Antonito. Chama is working on 484 and 488. I think Carlos intends to provide photos and commentary from Chama once he has a chance.

In January the Friends news page reported that "484 firebox work continues -- staybolts, partial fire door sheet installed next week, crack repair, etc. Tubes are being cut and prepared for installation, pistons and valve cages are fitted, rod and valve motion in work. Stencils are ready for tender lettering, will be "Flying C&TS" format.

488 pistons are built, valves are being built up and machined to take standard rings, valve cages are done, last driver set is in the wheel lathe for finish cuts, and locomotive tram is being checked."

Same thing in Chama. Lots of work going on they are re-building two engines in Chama and one in Antonito. There are some Chama pictures in the prior up-dates. The plan is for 3 engines for the 2004 season.

I wonder about that too?? Hardening will wear out the tube expanders ( or rollers ) rather quick - or.? As far as I know the rolling procedure itself makes the tube materiel stone hard and sometimes the material in the tubewall can start craks ( if rolled too hard ) that whith the help of corrosion and time creeps over to the tubesheet - whith that risk in mind annealling is the logical procedure to follow?

Another question: the tubesheet holes sometimes need repair after small accidents from the tuberemovalprocedure. After filling the mishaps whith welds and grinded of the most - whats the next tool to make the holes 100% circular?

Dear Ragnar; The next tool I use is a reamer. I turn it with A Large air motor. The 2" &3" can be reamed with a #4 motor the 5 1/2" use a #5 motor. regards bb

Since our firebox tubesheet was new in 1963 it have som small differences in holediameters - are there adjustable reamers in the market out there? And the tubexpandermotors will do the job - I also have a "too big" airmotor for drilling big holes in steel. It sounds like 20 H.D. bikes driving around in the shop when its running light - wonder what sound it will be loaded? Will the reamers take the power in such a nasty tool?

The person pictured inside 271s boiler is the one and only who can get down trough the dome when the bendt part of the dry pipe sits in place - he dismantled it and I could go inside to. I understand why all boilersmiths teams had some smaller types. Photo: J. B. Salvesen
