The Sayre Historical Society in Sayre, PA has just been received a former Lehigh Valley GE U23B diesel locomotive
The locomotive is one of eleven GE U23B diesel electric locomotives built in 1974 for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Upon inclusion into Conrail in 1976,

When it gets to Sayre it will be restored to its original colors and displayed in Sayre at the future Sayre Museum in the Sayre Lehigh Valley Railroad passenger station.

This donation came with a very large condition, that the Society transfer it. The current plan for movement is to attach the locomotive to an active locomotive to move it from its current location to Mehoopany, PA. When it reaches Mehoopany, it will then be attached to a different train and sent up to the Sayre yards Many obstacles must be overcome before that movement can take place.
The current plan is to install a display track with no connection to the main track. The society has identified the remains of the former Sayre passenger platform that extend from the south end of the Sayre station to just above the Packer Avenue bridge to lay the track. Norfolk Southern would bring the locomotive along side the display track where the locomotive will be met by a 500-ton crane to hoist and place the locomotive on the display track.

Finally, appropriate funds must be raised to defray the substantial costs to the Society to contract the move and to eventually repair and repaint the locomotive to its original Lehigh Valley colors.

If you would like to contribute funds to this project, please send check to U23B Project C/O Sayre Historical Society P.O Box 311, Sayre, PA 18840. or email gdeibler@stny.rr.com place "U23B" in the subject line. Or see www.sayrehistorical.com
