All;

I came home last night to the news that our home computer (which contains all of the photographs, data, and CD-ROM images for the "Surviving World Steam" Project) would not boot up. After
investigating the problem, it appears to be something related to either the hard disk or a disk drive controller failure.

At this point, I am not sure to what extent I have lost data. All of the "Steam Lizard" photographs except for one are in the online
Photo Gallery, and I have all of the latest steam engine lists from each project on a CD-R I was maintaining so I could work on it on
lunch breaks at work and at home. Most of the pictures from the project could be restored from backups I made as recently a month or two ago.

My biggest concern right now are the dozens of pictures I recieved for the "Surviving World Steam" project in the past month or two that may be lost, along with my family digital pictures and church bulletins, e-mail and other documents we wrote in the same time frame. Some or all may be retrevable from the disk drive; I just don't know at this point.

Obviously, no orders are going out at this time, and if you do not hear from me after having written to me recently, you now understand the reason for the "radio silence". (WP&Ymike, I did recieve your latest list of steam engines in the Yukon, and have already started work on it.)

Thank you for your patience in the matter. This computer is obviously central to various activities of my mine as well as work, so I will be trying to restore it as quickly as I can. I will still be participating on this board during breaks at work.

Whew! I thought you were talking about Hugh Hefner! What a catastrophe his hard drive failure would have been.

Let me know if I can help replenish your supply of loco and ship images.

James I had this problem once and it was the "master boot record"- a good tech shop can recover your data IF its just an mbr or similar failure. Have hope!

Which I suppose is why he is such an advocate for Viagra....but I digress.

James, I empathize. Last week I had to find a new battery for my new (5 year old) laptop in the wilderness of Montgomery. I did manage to get one at only slightly extravagant cost.

It did solve some of my problems, but I still had to trick it into starting up and tell it what day and time it was every time. Turns out there is a Sea Moss battery somewhere in the guts. I didn't know you could make a battery out of sea moss, but then again all I know is obslete so.....

Laptop specialists in Savannah yellow pages. The phone is answered at Raquel's Bar and Grill. They fix laptops in the back, as well as operate a pornographic video rental and used to have a tanning salon until they sold the beds recently. Located near the military base nextdoor to a rent by the hour motel. Evangelical literature on the counter.

You guys in Silicon Valley have it easy. Good luck James.

Here in Silicon Valley, the number of computer hardware sources is roughly equal to number of un-employed as the area lost over 20% of its jobs over the last 3 years.

James,

I beleive this is a reason most of us work with steam. Very little of it requires rebooting, only a lit oily rag.

I recall when Y2K was comming someone at the tourist railroad I was volunteering on at the time suggested a New Years train. When midnight rolled around and the speedometer crashed you could take it out of the holder, toss it out the window and finish the trip.

Good luck with the computer,

Post subject:  Thank you everyone for your messages of support

All,

Thank you all for your messages of support, both online and off-line. I took my computer to ECP Computer Parts here in Beaumont, TX.

I got it back today from it's first round of recovery. All of my "Surviving World Steam Project" files were intact; they gave the PC back to me so I could back them up before they further repaired the hard drive.

The entire project is now backed up on ten CD-ROMs. The computer will then go back to ECP Monday for further repairs.

Total repair bill so far? $30.00. I wish the rest of the south and Silcon Valley had a place like ECP; they are excellent, and have been around for a long time.

The entire project should be "open for business" again sometime next week.

I appreciate more than words can say all of you who have offered to restock my photograph collection. As I type this, I have enough pictures for the update this coming May, and nearly enough for the November 2004 update as well. I still have about a dozen complimentary CD-ROMs to send out to those who have helped so far; I need to catch up with myself before I am able to reciprocate your kindness with a complimentary CD-ROM when the time comes. Thank you everyone.
