Many years ago, there was a Baldwin Shark B unit carbody still residing in a Pennsylvania junk yard. Many have wondered if it ever survived, thinking it might might be mated with the two existing Shark A units someday for an A-B-A consist. That unit, along with two other "A" units had been re-engined with Alco 251 engines in or around the year 1962. If one looks closely, one can see the Alco FA style radiator section. An internal inspection revealed the presence of an Alco-style radiator section and cooling fan drive arrangement. Brings back good memories of when numerous Baldwin Shark nose diesels were on the dead line in Crestline, Ohio's PRR roundhouse, during the mid/late 1960's. As a teenager the Sharks were an adventure to climb on and photograph knowing that soon they would be shipped to the scrap yard. Good story. Ron Widman, Columbus, Ohio lineswest@columbus.rr.com |

I think it was a Pennsy passenger B unit and was used at the coal breaker in West Pittston Pa as a portable welding unit. Its trucks replaced with tractor tailor boogies. The only thing remaing of the B unit was the body which had the Pennsy stripe on it. As for the prime mover and generator how knows didn't look in it. At the breaker I didn't see any trucks so don't know if they survived. It was scrapped mid 90's along with most of the remaining wooden coal breakers in the Wyoming Valley. Interesting side note: Steamtown (Just down the street) was made aware of the rare gem and declined going after it. They probably would have gotten it for the cost of moving it. memnon11075@earthlink.net |
