Post subject:  Manhattan Elevated
Seeking info on Manhattan Elevated Ry. steam locomotives. Anyone know of a roster source? Interested in 2-4-2T Baldwin's one of which went in 1894 to Thousand Islands Ry. in Canada. Which one? and builders number/date? Thanks for any leads or information.

suggest you take a look at the Spring 1990 Railroad History.

John h. White wrote a long article with rosters called "Spunky Little Devils: Locomotives of the New York Elevated"

60 pages of his usual well researched history.

There are 2 or 3 0-4-4-t's in Alaska from the elevated

There is also the remains (shown below) of 0-4-4T Class E #156(329) on private property on the south shore of Lake Verret off State Highway 1, Louisiana. It was built by Baldwin in 1882 as construction number 6488.

It was sold to Napoleon Cypress Co. in July 1904. It is my understanding it was derailed by an engineer going too fast; and it was apparently stipped on site.

There's also the one bought by the Raquette Lake Carry RR and displayed nearby under a pavillion by a museum in the Adirondak Mtns., N.Y. state.
One of their boxcars is preserved IN Raquette Lake, where it fell off the carferry!

It is my understanding that there are six surviving Elevated Forneys; four from the Manhattan Elevated and two from Chicago Elevated.

The four from the Manhattan Elevated are:

tundra, E. of Solomon River, Solomon, AK
21 Class F New York/149/1886**
159 Class F New York/137/1886*
303 Class E Baldwin/5622/1881*

S of Lake Verret, Morgan City, LA
329 Class E Baldwin/6488/1882**

The two from the Lake Street Elevated are:

Mus of Transportation, St. Louis, MO

9 (Charles H) Rhode Island/2943/1893

639 Cent Fernando de Dios, Tacajo, Cuba

? Baldwin/13048/1892**

All of the ones with "**" are pictured on the "Surviving World Steam Locomotive" Program CD-ROM; the ones with "*" were pictured on past "Surviving World Steam Locomotive" Update CD-ROMs.

Post subject:  Adirondack Porter
The engine at the Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake, NY, is a Porter 0-4-0T, built in 1901. It was built for the Marion River Carry RR (which ferried canoe travelers from one lake to another) and apparently never worked on any other line, being abandoned for years in a wooden enginehouse before movement to the museum. It is in remarkably good condition and is under shelter.
I have a photo, just don't have time to dig it out right now.

"The remains of a cypress logging locomotive are located in the Atchafalaya Basin itself! Lying in its final resting place on private property on the south shore of Lake Verret off State Highway 1, this locomotive was accidentally derailed and landed on its side. The wheels, fittings, cylinders, and other parts were salvaged; and the wooden cab has since rotted away leaving only parts of the frame and boiler lying on the embankment.

"This engine, when seen by Judge Ford, a recognized authority on South Louisiana Logging railroads in the early 1960's appeared to him to be a old elevated locomotive. As mentioned above, Forneys were first developed for use on elevated railways; these rather strange tank engines came south after the big cities electrified their elevated lines and were used on logging and quarry lines. It appears to be Napoleon Cypress Co (ex-Manhattan El Forney) class E #156 (originially #329); one of only four Manhattan El forneys still in existance. If this is true, this may be the oldest locomotive remains in the state of Louisiana. It was sold to Napoleon Cypress Co. in July 1904.

"Thanks to Robert Mayeux for pointing out this one out, and to Dick Gibbens for supplying this photograph and information. Thanks also to Tom Davidson and Joe Brennan for solving a three-year mystery about the identity of this locomotive by supplying the above information. The other three Manhattan El Forneys are part of the "train to nowhere" on the Alaska tundra outsite of Dixon! Two are class F engines built in 1886, the third (which I think this one resembles) is a Baldwin class E built in 1881. An ex Chicago-El Forney is in the Museum of Transportation outside of St. Louis; it was built in 1893."

Wow, thanks for the information. This one looks
really rough, even less of a candidate for
preservation than the ones in Alaska!
