Not exactly preservation, but here are a few photos of our new Amtrak station in Saratoga, NY, which will have its grand opening on Monday. Still a finishing touch or two needed on the outside, but pretty fancy anyway. It is a nice building, but the exterior is a bit odd-shaped, looking like a symetrical building that someone cut a third off of one side with a circular saw. Not sure where today's architects come up with some of these ideas, but the old timers had a better sense of proportion and balance.

The previous depot was a boxy brick 1950s combination station, that was razed to build this one. It replaced the elegant Victorian station downtown when the tracks were rerouted to the west of the city to eliminate numerous grade crossings, each of which had a 24-hour watchman.

Post subject:  old depot downtown

Torn down in the late-1950s, when the tracks were removed and rerouted west of the city. There is now a 1950s-era supermarket on this site, with a big parking lot.

Numerous other views, both prototype and model, from the New England, Berkshire & Western website, which has an extensive model RR depicting the Delaware & Hudson and the Rutland at RPI in Troy, NY. They have accurately minaturized much of downtown Saratoga on their layout.
