<P>Does anybody know if any of the NYC electric freight motors (I think they were called R motors) that were sold to the CSS&SB still exist, and if so, where? While it is a shame that no CUT motors were saved, an R motor painted for CUT would sure make a nice display under the restored CUT.<br> mjruef@ble.org |

<P>The R-motors were not used in CUT. They were New York City-area freight motors, used primarily on the West Side (Manhattan) Freight Line to Croton Yard runs. After the late 40s removal of third rail on the West Side Line, they were used in general NY-area service, including passenger trains (with an accompanying "boiler car" which looked like a short boxcab electric on a tender underframe and trucks). With the demise of the CUT electrification about 1952, and the 22 surplus CUT P-motors that came to New York, the Rs were surplus, and some were bought by CSS&SB (and heavily modified). The last NYC R-motor was a yard and shop switcher at White Plains in 1961.<p>The only extant NYC electrics are S-motors at IRM and in the M&H NRHS collection (and possibly one at St. Louis?-- attn. Ron G.!), and the only T-motor, also at M&H.<br> |
