A local Boiler Mftg plant has the original boiler off an 1895 4-4-0 in house for total remanufacture. There is concern regarding the integrity of the "Steam Turret" (Manifold,) a box like item with connections, that sits atop the boiler inside the cab. It is the steam source for appliances. Is any one out there familiar with the procedure for requalifying this item or a source of a new one. Be glad to hear your recommendations or suggestions Thanks Vic vicnat@sasktel.net |

The engine I had previously worked on needed a new one as the original cast iron one was cracked. We contracted with a local industrial boiler repair company to fabriacate a new one. Fifteen years ago that cost the project $5,000.00 which was a bit high in my opion for the 50 lb. steel box with a half dozen pipe fittings welded in. Make sure a cert. plate is fastened to a new one and all the papers are in a safe file location should you go that route. If historical accuracy is to be maintained then I would think you will need to have a pattern made and cast a new one. If appearance is not a major concern, I would have the boiler maker fab a new one out of certified material. One way to test the integrity would be to dye check, Udt the casting and hydro test it. rstabler@sbcglobal.net |

Well, I don't know for sure, but I do know from talking to Mr. Jack Sine when I was out there that they were going to send it to Saskatchewan for a new boiler.
