I have purchased a blueprint of a hancock 3 chime whistle. I have the overall drawing but not the drawings of the lever or the bowl or some other components. Would it possible to make a replica without the drawings of the component pieces? Thanks for advice superheater@rrmail.com |

The quick but not simple anser is if you could borrow the pieces of an actual whistle. Then you make a silicone casting negative pattern (for the actual wax pattern) for an investment casting a.k.a. lost wax, then all you'll need is the foundry to do the casting, assuming you can make the mold for the metal to be poured into from the proper material. If you do so, for the naval bronze Crosby used, one of today's nearest casting alloy recipes is 54400. A foundry near me does cast this bronze alloy. Would Ray or others have a suggestion as to the material? If I take 660 cored tubing and cut the brasses out of them, I will have $400 in material cost in each brass plus a lot of machine time. The brasses will have a 9.25 outside dia and a .900 offset to the axle Center. the axle will be around 7.00 inches. The journal length is about 10 inches. fwantz@pressenter.com |

I'm guessing you've purchased an assembly view? i.e. a drawing that shows all of the parts pieces put together? If the drawing shows all of the components, and you can decipher all of the hidden lines, AND there are a couple of dimensions on the drawing, yes, you could use the known dimension to find the drawing's scale (1:1 drawn to actual size, 1:2 all dimensions are half the size of the actual part, etc) Once you have determined the scale, you can measure all of the dimensions of all of the components, multiply by the scale, and develop dimensioned drawings that way. However, you may miss some critical information, such as draft angles on the castings, thread sizes, etc, as the assembly view is only used to show how the parts go together. |

Though it does waste a lot of material, you will get a better job by starting with continuous cast tube. The quality and consistency of the metal is so much higher than what is possible with sand casting, that better service will certainly result. We have had excellent service using CDA 936 bronze from Magnolia Metals Corp, http://www.magnoliabronze.com/index.htm. 660 is BAD news for crown brasses!!! A long story can be told, but those of you who recall the (Norfolk) Southern steam program's green and gold beauty (the Famous 4501, of course...) with the perpetually hot driving wheel journals can thank 660 bronze alloy for the problem and your many diesel substituted trips. I'd have to go back and look to see what we used (Mark, I'm sure you recall off the top of your head since you spec'd it), but a high-lead tin bronze alloy is the answer. Additionally, Kelly speaks the truth about the alloy quality in bronze tubing, so bite the bullet on the material and maching cost and save yourself a tremendous headache.
