Post subject: The lost locomotive mystery of Clarksville,TN solved

In a recent post by Bob Yarger,he had related a story of a lost(sunk)locomotive in the Cumberland River at Clarksville,TN.No one seemed to know much about this,so I decided to take a look myself.I scuba dive when I can,and had been looking for something to do this upcoming July 4th.So I began to make preperations to visit Clarksville and dive the site.
I began searching the internet to find a motel in Clarksville, and came upon the Clarksville Community Website. On the site I noticed that the L&N Clarksville train station had been restored and is now the home of the Montgomery County Historical Society.Address and Phone number was included so I made a call to find information on the lost loco.
I spoke to Donna Hogan, she knew quite a bit on this subject, and got the whole story from her.
The L&N did indeed have a train wreck off the bridge in Clarksville in 1906.The locomotive went into the drink along with other equipment, but was all recovered. The Historical Society has photos of the locomotive being raised hung on the walls inside the station.Further referance of the wreck and recovery can be found in books authored by Dennis R.Mize(The L&N Memphis Line)and also Elenor Williams who wrote several local history books.
Sorry gang, but it seems this lost locomotive story is only folklore. That is how the majority of these lost loco tales go.
Rats! Now I have to find something to do over the holiday again.
Brian Hebert

Well, so much for the mystery. If this had been April 1, it would have been fun to see everyone's reaction to a fake story in which you dive into the murky waters of the river and just as your last tank is empty, you see down in a small cave, the umistakeable dark form of the locomotive.
Thanks for the real story. . .I think.
