I remember that shortly after the merger, Trains published an aerial photo of the yard where the CNW business train and its power was stored. As I recall there were 4-5 "A" units and at least a couple of "B" units, presumably most of them serviceable. I hope these got to good homes and are not razor blades. Anyone know?

Former C&NW Executive F-Units #402 and #403 are now at Canon City and Royal Gorge.

UP's Web site currently says that "In storage in Cheyenne are former Chicago and North Western "F" units, including the F7As CNW 400 and 401. The F7Bs are CNW 315, 410 and 411."

They were all saved. Some waiting for restoration at museums or tourist operations, a couple active in RR service, and a couple more remain as part of the UP historic locomotive collection in Cheyenne, WY.

If I recall correctly, an article in TRAINS from 1986 or 1987 gave the history of the C&NW business train and mentioned that there were actually two F7A's numbered 400. The second one was numbered #400 after the first one was retired. Obviously UP has one of them, and this one must be the other one.

Actually, some info on the UP website is out of date. The "other" 400 was sold to the Pioneer Railroad Corp. (seen below waiting for restoration for service on the Keokuk Jct Ry).
The UP only retained one "A" unit, the 401.

The more I look at the WGN "F" the more I think it was just a Chicago Suburban pool engine because of the black trucks. I thought all the C&NW Business "F" trucks were silvered).
The HEP muffler on the roof looks pretty standard arrangement for the suburban pool locos too.

The giveaway that this was an exec unit is the paint "shadow" where the metal nose emblem was. Only exec units had them. The exec A units were rebuilt from commuter service units, thus the muffler arangement.

There were at least 2 CNW 400's, and possibly 3.

4 A's and 3 B's went to UP in the merger; none were serviceable, all had had parts removed, and all had been vandalized before the merger.

2 of the A's were sold to and are in service on the CC&RG.
1 A was sold to Pioneer Railcorp.
2 of the B's are in service on RailCruise American train (St. Louis). They also bought the 3rd B, the least complete of the bunch, for parts.

1 A unit is still on UP at Cheyenne.
