This is not the original mill, this is the Susanville mill operated by Sierra Pacific and thier operations on the ex SP Branch between Wendel and Susanville. The original Quincy Railroad at Quincy Ca is still running.

Bob-

Quincy Railroad operates two divisions.

The Quincy Division is the "classic" Quincy Railroad, and it is not in any imminent danger of closing. This division operates maybe three miles of track from the town of Quincy to a connection with the Union Pacific (ex-Western Pacific) at Quincy Juntion. I doubt that the original enginehouse still stands, or if it does it is not used by the railroad any more. The portion of the road that this enginehouse was located on was abandoned in 1969, when the line was cut back to the current end of track inside the sawmill complex that sustains the QRR to this day. The road dieselized with a GE 44-ton diesel (#3) in 1945, and the Alco that is featured in one of the links was QRR #4, a S-1 purchased from the WP in the early 1970's. In 1995 the #4 was replaced with the #5, a SW-1200 moved in from the defunct Amador Central Railroad (AMC #11). Both the #3 and #4 were donated to the Feather River Rail Society (Portola Railroad Museum). The #3 was moved out in early 2002 and is currently at the museum after serving on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in Virginia City, NV for most of the summer of 2002; friction bearings kept the #4 in Quincy, and at some point this spring (if it hasn't already happened) the diesel was to be loaded onto the FRRS moving flat car for the short ride to Portola. The #5 went down for maintenance a few months ago, and for a period of a couple weeks the Quincy leased a GP-9 (in full SPSF Kodachrome paint) from the FRRS to keep things going.

The portion of the Quincy that is dying is the Susanville Division, which started operations in 1986 over the 23-mile former Southern Pacific branchline between Susanville and Wendel. The Quincy is owned by timber giant Sierra Pacific Industries, which also owns the Susanville and Quincy mills. The Susanville Division uses two locomotives, TR-6 #1100 (ex-SP #1100, purchased by the road in 1986) and SW-7 #12 (ex-Amador Central #12), transfered in during 1995.

The reason for the closure of the Susanville Division is that the Susanville sawmill is set to close soon. The Susanville mill is one of the last, if not the last "large log" mill owned by SPI that is still in operation, and the primary purpose for this mill has been the creation of high quality lumber that is used in the creation of window frames and other moulding type products created by another SPI subsidiary. The mill was also heavily dependent on timber sales from US Forest Service lands, and there has simply been not enough timber available to keep the mill going.

The end of the Susanville Division more than likely means the end of the old Modoc Line from Wendel to Flanigan, as the QRR interchange traffic was the only thing keeping this track alive.

Hope this helps.
