Below is a link to an aerial photo of the Lima Loco Works (now deceased) in April of 1989 on the Terraserver. Scroll the photo up to the top center arrow to see the turntable (still there as far as I know) and foundations for the NKP yard roundhouse that was adjacent to the works. >Cool Posting!!!!!!!!! The Erie main is the line north of the NKP roundhouse foundation. The juction where the B&O, NKP and Erie crossed, just right of the NKP roundhouse was called Erie Junction. The Erie & DT&I crossing to the east was "SJ". Scroll up to NS Tower, where the PRR crossed the B&O/NKP and slightly north of that you can see the B&O turntable and roundhouse ghost images (all gone). The NKP turntable is still there. Don't forget Ford Park on the DT&I and Robb Ave. Yard on the B&O, north of the roundhouse. Lima WAS a cool place, indeed!!!!!!!!! Bruce, can you post the link to the photo of the B&O roundhouse foundations? Once you get there you can just cut and paste the address (URL) into the Optional Link URL and give it an Optional Link Title. I'd really like to see images of Eddystone (Baldwin) and Schnectady (ALCo) if anyone who knows those places better than I could track them down and post them. Thanks. I think it's still not widely know the factory was owend by the Kovalchicks. I believe Lima is trying to make a powerplant out of the site. Last I heard the pattern shop building was still standing but it may be gone now too. Lima Locomotive Works hkading@rypn.org |

Thanks for the info. I was fortunate enough to see the Works while they were still standing in the 1980's. Damn, that's almost as sad as seeing a steamer cut up. Like Mr. Mallet said ~100 years ago, our society has no appreciation at all for industrial archeology. I remember reading there was still a huge horizontal mill left in one of the shops, used for planing steam locomotive frame sections (non-cast bed type) as recently as the 80's. Although the enlcosure is open air it is fairly well covered and protected from the elements. Last time I saw it was in excellent condition. There was a Shay stored at the site too up until the demoliton. It was moved to a small town for display in a park may 30-40 miles from Lima (again can't remember the name). Working on the 765 in the erecting hall during '90 & '91 was about as cool as it gets. Also, firing the last steam loco out of "The Loco" was pretty awesome. zak@erinet.com |

There is an industrial supply co. in Lima that has a large "back room" full of old equipment and junk. Wandering through it one day I found several very large screw jacks that Lima used to support engine frames. Also found some other piece of equipment, i think it was an indexing attachment, with a Lima Locomotive Works ID tag on it. Its all for sale, so if you want some authentic Lima screw jacks they are at EDCO in Lima. rick@todengine.org |
