I'm trying to find some information on a Baldwin Forney 0-4-4T built in the late 19th century, builder #12990. I have a photo of it from about 1903 lettered C.U.T.Ry. #51, sublettered "Clearing Yards", suggesting it ran in Chicago. Can anyone suggest a source for information on this engine's origins? According to CERA Bulletin #113, Chicago's Rapid Transit, Volume one, this is one of the South Side Forneys built in 1892 for the Chicago & South Side Rapid Transit, the first elevated line in Chicago. It was #26. They were all sold off after the line was electrified. The only survivor of these is stuffed and mounted in Cuba, in a highly modified condition. MOT has the only surviving Lake Street Elevated Forney from Chicago, #9, named the "Charles H." Its namesake was Charles H. Deere, son of John Deere and second president of Deere & Co, tractor builders to the world. Museum of Transportation rdgoldfede@aol.com |

Ron, Too bad there is not a picture of the Chicago Forney on the MOT web site.Perhaps some time. I have an old post card of her when she was still painted in her Mexican scheme. You can see the Lake Street Forney at the left of the photo for our Roberts Building on the site Quick Tour. We did a lot more than repaint this loco, restoring its pilot to the original configuration for elevated service, replacing the back of the cab, and installing a new water tank of the original size.
