Patrick, Yes there was interest in this topic. Thanks for the update. Do you know where the tires came from? I assume the "ring of fire" to attache them will be performed at Steamtown, correct? The tires were fixed at TVRM. This has been an ongoing issue since the 3254 can't run without them. The next question is when the 3254 will run again? Can't say for sure since I do not work on the locomotives (even if I did I couldn't tell you probably), but when I see it under steam again I'll let everyone know. Pat pat_mcknight@nps.gov |

They went to Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum's shop in Chattanooga, where the old, worn tires were removed and several hundred cracks in the driver centers were welded up. Then the wheels were turned and new spacers welded in place before the new tires were applied. Then the drivers were turned and the pins were quartered. The repaired wheel sets and old tires, plus the driving boxes, left TVRM Friday and showed up in Scranton Monday. K4s1361@hotmail.com |

Last time I looked, 3377's tires showed only the scratches acquired during towing from Canada to Bellows Falls, and then to Scranton. bruceman2@earthlink.net |

Not looking for the price to the last penny, but a reasonable idea of what it costs to have TVRM do that sort of work. I'd like to know for a possible future project. Does anyone out there have any idea what ever happened to the Cagneys 15" gauge locos that ran at the Toledo Zoo. I have contacted the zoo but no luck there. |

As an addendum to the above request,, anyone have any knowledge or information about the former steamers at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo ? The trains were taken out many years ago, and my information is that the steamers were put into storage with the Chicago Park District,, but no one (to my knowledge) has seen anything of them since. The former Brookfield Zoo equipment is now at the LaPorte County Historical Steam Society's "Hesston Steam Museum" at Hesston, IN. See the below link for a recent photo (by Tim Bainter) of the ex-Brookfield Zoo Sandley-built 2-4-2 242 at the Museum. This photo is one of many on Tim Boshart's website. Other photos show the ex-Brookfield Zoo 2-8-2, which was a Sandley rebuild of a Jung (German) outside-frame 0-8-0 "Feldbahn" locomotive chassis. I believe this equipment is to be evaluated for future restoration to service on the museum's dual gauge (2' and 3') railroad. Regards, Jim Robinson Brookfield Zoo 242 @ Hesston |

In addition to the rebuilt "Brigadelok" 0-8-0 reboilered and Americanized and the new 2-4-2, they also have the SW-style engine built from a Chance Rides chassis. A 2-4-4 for the zoo which was never completed and delivered was sold after spending many years in the back of the Sandley shop in Wisconsin Dells. It is supposedly to get rebuilt at the Merrick Light Railway shop in Marshall, WI. I don't know about any 15" gauge line at the Toledo Zoo. In the 1950's they had a 12" gauge system that used Ottaway 4-4-0's. I've got family movies from the mid 1950's showing the Ottaway running with a length of pipe stuck in the stack to get the smoke up above the engineer's face! They also had a diesel F-unit, but it was stored when we visited. trainrider47@aol.com |
