Of late I've been working on a brief history of the CP G5s that have been preserved for an upcoming issue of Railfan. However, the current status of a few of them is in question. Does anyone know what has become of the 1238 and 1286 at Staunton, VA? Are they being worked on, or should I list them as "stored?" It seems to me Howard Pincus touched on the status of 1246 recently, but I can't seem to find his posting. What are the plans for this one? Lastly, I need some good information about the restoration of 1201, and its subsequent excursion use in the 1980s. Anyone know a good source? Jeff Terry jterry618@earthlink.net |

Just spoke with someone connected with the locos on this very issue last night. Yes, the proper terminology would be "stored"; however, I am told that one of them could be made serviceable and FRA compliant in only a week or less, given the proper cash infusion and motivation (movie contract, whatever). The other, "Maybe a month or two?" Yes, they look at the moment like junkyard specials, but looks can be deceiving. Supposedly they are doing minor servicing on both locos as time and resources permit. LNER4472-NOSPAM-@bcpl.net |

Have either of these locomotives had their Part 230 survey and other work done? They last operated in 1993, and while I'm sure they could easily be made servicable under the old rules, what about the current rules? HP Big G-5 fan hpincus@mindspring.com |

Well I wish we could be as optimistic as a week....how about 4? 1286 has had the form 4 calculations and needs a flue job, flues are on site and ready, but Jack hasn't seen the need to reflue with no place to go....yet 1238 needs complete part 230 work, but it's not expected to take too long consider the shape she's in. She's also waiting on her trailing truck installation which I think has now reached it's 3rd year, how ever all the parts are on sight and it's basicly waiting on a every body having the time to provide the labor (an as per norm, the backhoe is down) both engine either have the second water glass installed or waiting installation as for their future, we'll have to wait in see, some major changes have/are occuring in the Staunton area and tourism is the main foucs of the city now, what better draw? btrue@vt.edu |

Jeff; There are a few 1201 people here on this list; I did manage to fire her from 1983 to somewhere around 1990, so I can answer at least some of your questions. There was a booklet produced back in the mid-80s when 1201 was still going strong. I have pictures taken when excursions were running, from lineside and from inside the cab, when I was not firing. (mainly black and white). email questions to alex.stewart (at) crc.ca If I don't know the answers, I know people who would. To quote verbatim the secondhand source, "IF they can get a flue-time extension, $10K and a week. At worst, you're talking a month to six weeks and $40-50K." And yes, it appears that the strategy of sitting and waiting until the Staunton area wants a steam-train operation to draw tourists is the strategy being pursued. As noted, steam locomotives don't eat much cold, but........... LNER4472-NOSPAM-@bcpl.net |

No chance of a flue extention now. There was a two year extention starting from the time of the first fire. It was built for a movie deal that never was and now it's reflue time. And your right they don't eat much cold, just a tarp every few months, now if we could only keep the vandals away from the coach windows....... btrue@vt.edu |

It seems all this insanity started the same way with the grandparents house in Jersey City (256 5th Street) backing up to the now national historical treasure on the elevated railroad to Harsimus Cove (JH). Wartime days and nights of GG1's P5's,M-1's, NYC Mikados, B-6's, C-1's, H's of all classes and an never ending stream of exotic box cars. All gone but the memories, the stonework, and the residual passions. What started in Jersey City was nurtured on the NYLB in Belmar. If there was sufficient interest a trip would be doable. v-scarpitti@att.net |

We can never not think about the real G-5's the PRR/LIRR 4-6-0's. The largest in their class. And 3 are preserved. One in PA and two on Long Island, BEDT15@aol.com |

I'm sorry- I had a hard time following the "flue extension" part of this and what loco it applies to. I've often wondered about the status of these locomotives... > 1286 has had the form 4 calculations and > needs a flue job So this loco has had flues removed, all visual, NDT and metallurgy done, Form 4 worked up and is just awaiting re-installation of flues, hydrostatic tests and the usual systems and debugging work and FRA inspections ? > 1238 needs complete part 230 work, but it's > not expected to take too long consider the > shape she's in. And this loco is not yet stripped for inspection, etc. ? How many folks work on these locomotives - is it a handful of guys or a big organization, etc ? staybolt@bellsouth.net |

How many folks work on these locomotives - is it a handful of guys or a big organization, etc ? I haven't had any involvement since 1993, and at that time Jack S had the help of some buddies plus a few folks from the Old Dominion Chapter, NRHS. |

Most of us (NCTM included) are working hard for operating money right now that's in short supply due to increased costs and reduced visitation... going after new projects is real risky, darn near impossible. Having said that: If anyone is able to latch onto ex-SR 2-6-0 2100 before she goes into the melting pot, I'm offering a cab ride, 10 lbs of pulled pork BBQ and a case of Cheerwine when she's sitting on the Spencer turntable...sigh. http://nctrans.org Wrinnbo@aol.com |
