References to a Dupont paint called Dulux Gold often appear on lettering diagrams for passenger cars and locomotives. Does anyone know if there is a current Dupont paint color that matches Dulux Gold?
At Squamish we are getting ready to letter a FP-7 and two coaches and want to get as close to the original color as possible.
Any assistance will be appreciated.

Have you talked with Canadian Pacific? I am sure that they have had to answer this question (and probably many others related to replicating this scheme) when they repainted their F-units a few years ago.

No paint code number on the draing? The notation "Dulux Gold" just says it was a gold color made by DuPont in the Dulux alkyd enamel line. You can try checking with DuPont to see if they have any current matches to these historic numbers:

Most of these numbers were picked up from EMD styling drawings and are Duco lacquer, but matching colors were likely available in the Dulux line. The colors listed simply as "gold" may be metalics, while the "Imitation Golds" are some shade of dirty yellow. I know for fact that the 254-54292 used by the Soo Line was a rather light creamy yellow.

ONE SHOT Brand lettering enamel has a color called Imitation Gold which is a good color againt most dark backgrounds and closely matches many of the traditional lettering paints for non metallic gold finishes. It covers well, goes on easily, weathers well, and is widely available. You can always buy a small can and try it for color etc.

What Railroad paint scheme is this equipment goint to be painted? Wouldn't the first step be to confirm what the correct color gold actually is? Or are they just going into a tourist RR scheme.

Dupont use to have a stock color called "Dulux Imitation Gold", it was in the Dulux line and I think it was 018D, I got some years ago from an auto paint store but the paint line no longer exsists. Another stock color was 031 "Omaha Orange" which got converted to the Centari line. Think I'm right on the numbers.

A close match to an imitation gold is the yellow-gold color applied to Grove cranes.

Dennis, the cars to be painted are ex-CNR from the BCR Royal Hudson fleet. They will be (and are now) CPR Tuscan red with stick on gold lettering for BCR. The cars will receive new Tuscan paint and gold lettering for West Coast Railway, our operating entity. The layout of the paint and lettering will follow CPR practice so that the cars will blend with our two FP-7s and,in the future, Royal Hudson #2860. These cars are not part of our historic collection and were acquired specifically for off site excursion service. We do, however, want to be close to authentic. For the purist, they won't be CPR cars, but the look will be very similar.

So, since these aren't a historic preservation, I'll add my voice to the chorus singing the praises of One Shot sign painter's enamel. It brushes well, weathers forever, and looks good. If you can't find it locally, you should be able to get it from:

It sounds like the FP-7's might be a historic paint job, and so perhaps more effort should be taken to track down the proper color. Likewise, with the amount of striping and lettering involved, this should probabaly be a sprayed on automotive finish job. DuPont Performance Coatings should be able to match to a sample, and MAY be able to match to a historic Dulux or Duco number. I bet that someone on the CP Special Interest Group modeling list has access to an EMD styling drawing that would show the original numbers. Give them a try at:

> For what it's worth, Micro-scale Industries (800-722-5306) makes Dulux Gold decal lettering for models. They may have researched the real specs in the matching Dupont or PPG paint color. Note, certain gold paint has too much metallic reflection and thus one can lose visibility of the lettering from certain viewing angles. Even the paint used in decals has this problem. Make sure the gold paint is yellow enough and opaque enough to avoid this problem. A great deal depends on the how dark is the background. A black background color is best.
