From Yahoo Group Posting: The new "Oregon State Railroad Museum" scheduled to open in 2005, has received and accepted an official offer from Polk County, Oregon, of the gift of the old Perrydale Railroad Depot. The condition is, that it must be removed from its present location; and since it would not be truckable any distance (heigth and it's leaning), it will need to be dismantled. I'm hoping that once the roof is removed, the building (approx 30' X 25') can be taken apart in wall sections; and not have to be 100% disassembled. Either way, we need people who would like to see the depot saved, to volunteer to help us disassemble and move the depot. We also need a large truck to haul it; as well as a temporary site to store the sections, until we get a museum location. We are looking into several options for that. The museum's new website is now online; and as of Tuesday, we changed the homepage's format. The website's url is . Please, consider helping us to save this historic Oregon railroad depot; as we have only a couple of months to get it removed, or the land owner will have it bulldozed; and it will be lost forever. Yet the "museum" has no means to dismantle or move the depot, nor a place to store it, nor I assume a place or plan to display it. As a former Oregonian and a railfan, this post concerns me a little. One of the recurrent themes of this Board has been the duplicity of efforts and "territorialism" among several rail groups located in the same geographical area. What this often translates to is not enough patrons and/or money to go around, and everyone starves a little (or a lot). To my knowledge in Oregon there is no established rail museum. Why then not collaborate to create one first-class operation, especially when you have the chance to incorporate the very credible and ALREADY ESTABLISHED groups operating the SP 4449 and the SP&S 700? This seems to be the mission of the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation in Portland. Why re-invent the wheel? Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation |

Hmmm....this "group" takes responsibility for one of the most historic depots in Oregon but has no way of moving, transporting, or land to store it, has registered with the state almost every wording combo of "Oregon State Railroad Museum", and still claims on its own web pages that it will be "bigger and better than Sacramento". This "OSRM" plans to take on freight service...from what railroad? I'm not going to start in with "thier" plans for the monorail in Roseburg...I promise. Smokebox |
