In October 2003, Camp 5, Laona Northern commenced
a complete rebuild of The Vulcan 2-6-2 steam
locomotive. Extensive boiler work was required,
as was machinery rebuild, including new axels, driving boxes, wedges and all parts of the runing
gear. So far, work has progressed to the point, that things are going back together and the locomotive will be ready for it's first run in early June 2004 in Laona Wisconsin. Camp 5 is a
small tourist railroad in northern Wisconsin. See

Cool. Nice freindly little operation. Now, who do we contact to encourage to repaint the equipment back into Soo Line colors? Both coaches, and two of the three cabeese are ex-Soo, with the last caboose being ex-DM&IR. I belong to the Soo Line Hist. & Tech. Society, and would be more than happy to track down the stencils.

The "circus" colors may have made sense for the tourist train years ago, but they don't even advertise the trip under the Laona & Northern name anymore.

By the way, little 4 spot was purchased new by another Wisconsin shortline, the Fairchild & Northeastern.

I was talking to the contractor who did the boiler work on the #4. Didn't go into great detail on what had to be done. I know about some of the side sheet work and staybolts, any other info on the extent of boiler work? I have been meaning to take a drive over there to see what I could find out and maybe take some pictures, but haven't made it yet. Glad to hear the rebuild has gone well. How about some gory details for those of us who are interested? Not trying to be nosey, just genuinely interested in all steam rebuilds. Regards, John.
