Consider this a survey of "benefits" you provide your staff and volunteers. NCTM has offered a free lunch in the past, a practice that the budget did not allow to continue. When the budget allows, we provide partial scholarships to ARM or TRAIN. Currently we offer the gift shop discount, annual banquet, courtesy safety glasses and hard hat, annual outing and discounts on lodging in the area (primarily as a courtesy to the many out of town volunteers we have). One request we have on the table now is to provide our Birthday Caboose to staff or volunteers at no charge. Branford provides various degrees of Gift Shop discounts, differing with the cost of the particular membership class. Except for the cheapest class, the opportunity is offered to take training for operations. Officers, Board Members, and other insiders may be considered for other positions like dispatcher, or running more exotic equipment. 104577.651@compuserve.com |

FEBT and FOCTS have both offered "premiums" at various levels of membership or donations, a la Public Television affiliates. FEBT gives a fine art print to $50 donors to its restoration fund; FOCTS used to offer various premiums (fine art prints, mugs, etc) at various levels of membership. The Mountain State Railroad and Logging Historical Society at Cass WV provides housing and food to all of it's volunteers. All housing is in a company house and all meals are provided. Ear plugs are some times necessary (you never know who you'll be rooming with...;) btrue@vt.edu |

One a month, a free lunch. A bed in the bunk room, with a shower next door is always available. A place to park your RV for the weekend is also available. 10% in the giftshop, reduced prices on sodas/drinks. OK to ride train whenever as a volunteer. Pacific Southwest Railway Museum |

I do not know if this is always the case, but this weekend at Ohio Central: -- A Bunk or birth in their ex P&LE pullman, "White Castle" -- Meals provided -- free education on steam equipment, saftey practices, etc. -- free ear plugs -- lending of safety glasses for those of us bright enough to misplace ours on Friday..... Mid-Continent's Perks: A copy the "Railway Gazette" 4 times a year, a museum calendar each year, bimonthly issues of the "Steamer!" newsletter, a 10% discount in the gift shop, and a pass to ride the regular trains for free. Boyd bowens@rypn.org |

Speaking of discount lodging, I recently arranged for our volunteers to obtain the corporate discount at the economy grade motel that many of us out-of-towners regularly use. In doing so, I found that the discount is good throughout the entire chain of motels. Total effort involved: 3 phone calls. Total cost: $0.00.
