PVC lagging

Just some photos showing the use of PVC pipe under the boiler jacket of B&M 4-4-0 494, to replace the former asbestos lagging.

It won't insulate as well, but could be connected to form a clever boiler water preheater. I'm surprised it will withstad the heat without melting.

It looks to me this is only a cosmetic restoration. The pipe is only to hold the jacketing in position, not for insulation purposes.

I work on the NYC 6721 in Utica,NY and we used
1" poly styrene foam board cut into 2" wide stips
under our new jacket and it worked out well.

Soo Line 4-6-2 2713 in Stevens Point, WI was recently restored this way, and looks great. The PVC pipe won't hold water, and has minimum contact with the boiler shell, so should avoid pitting problems. In addition to the PVC pipe, the group used what appeares to be pre-colored black PVC sheet for the jacket. The lower edge of the jacket ends at an angle flange attached to the top of the running board, leaving the entire lower portion of the shell open to drain, and the rest free to ventilate. In all, a good looking cosmetic restoration that is sensitive to preserving the boiler. I'm not associated with the group, but if anyone needs contact info, e-mail me off list.
