There is an excellent brief on RyPN re: Llangollen Railway. I visited there in 1998 and participated in their Driver (Engineer) Training Program. For $325 US I spent 4 hours in the cab of Black Prince, a 2-10-0, alternating between firing and running the locomotive. It was a terrific experience. The program is a major fundraiser for the Railway.

The Llangollen reminded me of the operations at Strasburg: neat, tidy, efficient; about the same length of track; nice attention to the details. As at Strasburg, the engine runs around the train at both ends of the line.

It is worth a visit if you are traveling to the UK.
